War has always been a subject of interest for artists, and creators across various artistic disciplines have addressed it in diverse ways. Shadi Ghadirian, a prominent Iranian photographer known for her staged and conceptual photography, has created impactful works reflecting on social issues. In her photo series Nil, Nil, she focuses on the subject of war and its effects on women, using visual signs and symbols to depict this human concern. The aim of this research is to analyze the impact of war on women in Nil, Nil through the lens of Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory. The study seeks to decode the signs presented in the series and interpret their semantic implications. This research follows a descriptive-analytical method, and the required data has been gathered through both library and field research. The findings of the study indicate that, although women experience war more indirectly compared to men, the negative effects of war deeply influence their everyday lives, emotional states, and psychological well-being. Moreover, the research highlights that women play a crucial role in maintaining the emotional stability of their families during wartime. Through semiotic analysis, the study reveals how Ghadirian’s use of symbolic elements effectively conveys the silent yet profound struggles of women affected by war.
