The mural paintings of Sogdiana—especially those discovered in Panjikent, Ghagha-Shahr, and other cultural centers of the eastern Iranian world—constitute a unique visual archive that predates Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh and reflects a vibrant tradition of storytelling in visual form. This research employs a comparative, character-based methodology to explore the correspondences between prominent figures in the Shahnameh and their visual representations in Sogdian mural art, with an emphasis on narrative continuity and cultural memory.
Through case studies of characters such as Zal, Rostam, Sohrab, Siyavash, Farud, Gordafarid, Gordiyeh, Zahhak, and Fereydun, the study identifies recurring visual motifs, narrative parallels, and symbolic associations. These include concepts such as divine authority (farr), tragic heroism, purification through fire, maternal mourning, and dualistic struggle between order and chaos. The murals are examined in relation to their composition, iconography, gesture, costume, and contextual placement within Sogdian domestic and ritual spaces.
Significantly, the research argues that these murals should not be seen as later illustrations of literary epic but as autonomous narrative agents that either informed or paralleled early Iranian epic traditions. This interdisciplinary investigation combines art historical analysis with comparative mythology and Persian literary studies, offering new insights into how visual culture contributed to the transmission and transformation of epic themes before the rise of Islamic-era manuscript traditions.
