The interaction between the fields of archaeology and art research, as an interdisciplinary approach, can be effective in obtaining information about artistic artifacts discovered in historical cemeteries. During the 2002 archaeological excavations at the Toul cemetery in Gilan, various artistic objects were unearthed, one of which was a small golden object found next to the skeleton of a woman. In the excavation report, Khalatbari referred to this object as a cup; however, significant differences in its size, shape, and decorative motifs suggest that this attribution may not be entirely accurate. Since no specific study has yet been conducted regarding the possible alternative nature of this golden artifact, the present research aims to foster reflection in this area by linking the archaeological and artistic aspects of the object, seeking to answer questions concerning its nature and function. The study offers arguments against the identification of the object as a cup. Data were collected through library research and interviews with the residents of Toul village, and are presented using a descriptive-analytical method. The results indicate that, considering the symbolic interpretations of the motifs and their correspondence with neighboring civilizations, the object was likely a fire holder with a missing attachment piece, suggesting the prevalence of Mithraism in the region.
